What is Krill oil?
Krill oil is an extract prepared from a species of Antarctic krill or just normal water body krill. Antarctic krill is a species of krill found in Antarctic waters of the southern ocean. A krill is a small swimming crustacean from the same family as crabs, lobsters, and shrimp amongst many others. In Norwegian, krill means whale food. This is true since whales mainly eat krill.
The two most important components in krill oil are omega 3 fatty acids which is similar to those found Indian oil, and phospholipid-derived fatty acid (PLFA), mainly known as phosphatidylcholine which is also referred to as marine lecithin.
People usually extract oil from the krill and place the oil in capsules which is thrilled for medicinal purposes. Some brands may indicate they use Antarctic krill, while others use the normal kind of krill that is found in other water bodies.
This oil is usually used for heart diseases, high levels of certain blood fats (triglycerides) and high cholesterol levels in the body. Although krill oil might be similar to fish oil, the fats found in this oil are believed to be very beneficial fats that lower cholesterol, making blood platelets less sticky and decrease swelling. When the blood platelets become less sticky, they are less likely to form clots which are very helpful.
Differences between Krill Oil and Fish Oil
Krill oil and fish oil are both rich in omega 3 fatty acids, mainly (EPA) eicosapentaenoic acid and (DHA) docosahexaenoic acid. Even though they both contain these free fatty acids, krill oil does contain significantly higher amounts of choline-containing phospholipids and a phosphatidylcholine concentration of 34 grams per 100 grams of oil.
Krill oil also contains a generous amount of astaxanthin which is at 0.1 to 1.5 mg/ml of which this depends on the processing methods used. This is responsible for its red color.

Some research also shows that taking 1-1.5 grams of some krill oil product daily would end up reducing the total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (which is bad) and increase the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (which is good) in patients reporting to have high cholesterol.
High Triglycerides (a type of blood fat)
It is said that taking a specific brand of krill oil product 0.25-2grams twice daily for twelve weeks also appears to significantly lower triglyceride levels in most people who were tested to have high triglyceride levels.
