What is Premarin?
Premarin also was known as conjugated estrogen is a tablet that features a mixture of estrogen hormones which help in the treatment of menopause symptoms such as vaginal changes, hot flashes, and also in the prevention of osteoporosis. Estrogen is a female sex hormone which is produced by the ovaries and is quite necessary for various body processes.
Premarin is basically used by women to reduce menopause symptoms which are caused by the body making less estrogen. If you use Premarin for treating symptoms that are around the vagina, you need to consider the products that are applied inside the vagina directly before taking any other form of the medication such as absorbing through the skin medications taken by mouth.
There are also other various products that can be taken by women to prevent bone loss after menopause. You should also note that before you decide to use the product you can consider taking other medications such as bisphosphonates or raloxifene which also help in preventing bone, they are safer, and also quite effective. Men and women can also use certain products to treat various types of cancers such as breast cancer and prostate cancer, which may have spread to other parts of the body.
Who Makes Premarin?
The predecessor of Premarin was Emmenin, which was an extract of pregnant women’s urine. A very similar competing product was Progynon. Conjugated estrogen which is similar to Premarin was contained in both of these products. However, they were human estrogen and not equine estrogens, therefore, making a difference in the composition. Estriol glucuronide was the major active ingredient in Progynon and Emmenin.
In the late 30s, researchers in the Biochemistry department at the University of Toronto isolated Estrone sulfate from the urine of pregnant mares. In 1941 the first introduction of Premarin was done by Wyeth Ayerst for treatment of various menopause symptoms and hot flushes. The only thing that had to be proven at that time was the efficacy and safety of Premarin.
