Who is Dwayne Johnson?
Dwayne Johnson needs no introduction. Known to millions of people worldwide as “The Rock”, he has enjoyed immense popularity, both as a wrestler and as a Hollywood Superstar. He is well known for his incredible musculature, and as a matter of fact, his incredible physique has cemented his position as one of the top action movie stars. He is also an excellent actor and respected by his fans for being a good person.
Dwayne Johnson is a Samoan bodybuilder, actor, and an ex-wrestler. As a wrestler, he has won the WWE Championship multiple times over the course of his career. He has also won the Mr. Olympia ICON award, as a recognition of his support of bodybuilding over the years. Currently, Dwayne Johnson stands at 6’5”, weighing in at a solid 260lbs.
Background on Dwayne Johnson
Dwayne Johnson is descended from two wrestling families. Indeed, bodybuilding and wrestling are in his blood. His father was a famous wrestler, Rocky Johnson, while his mother was descended from Peter Maivia, a famous Samoan wrestler. In his youth, Dwayne was far more interested in football and played in Pennsylvania for his school. He was also a member of the track and field team, as well as the wrestling team. He received a full scholarship to the University of Miami to play a defensive tackle and tried to make his way onto professional football teams. However, when he managed to make his way onto the Miami Hurricanes, an injury sidelined him. After his football dreams did not work out, he went to his father and asked him to teach him wrestling.
Once his training was done, he started wrestling professionally, and a couple of years later, he signed a contract with the World Wrestling Federation.
From 1996 to 2004, he wrestled in the WWF shows together with John Cena, starting his career under the name Rocky Maivia, which slowly changed to The Rock.
He won a large number of competitions in his time as The Rock, paving the path to his acting career. As his popularity shot up, he started getting offers to act in movies. His first movie role was in the movie “The Mummy Returns”. Since then, he has acted in a large number of action movies, including big-budget franchises like “The Fast and the Furious”.

Dwayne Johnson has led an athletic life. Since he is descended from wrestling families, he has excellent genes that give him his immense height and musculature. Nonetheless, he has supplemented his natural gifts with huge amounts of hard work. His training regimen has evolved over the years as his focus has changed. While weights were and remain a large part of his workout, there are plenty of exercises to help develop his agility and flexibility. Due to his profession as an actor, he has to appear graceful, and training for balance and flexibility can help with that.
During a movie shoot, he exercises six days a week, and when not shooting, he exercises six days a week, twice a day. His stamina and endurance are insane.
Generally, if he has to build a particular physique for a movie, his exercises usually involve weight training.
His routine for action movies is similar to what is given below –
Every day starts with an hour of cardio.
- Monday – Chest workouts with exercises like bench presses, dumbbell presses, and cable flys.
- Tuesday – Leg workouts with exercises like leg presses, leg curls, and barbell lunges.
- Wednesday – Abs and arms workouts with exercises like various types of curls, crunches, and dips.
- Thursday – Back workouts with exercises including deadlifts, shrugs, and rowing.
- Friday – Shoulder workouts with exercises like shoulder presses, raises and reverse flys.
- Saturday – Leg workouts with exercises like walking lunges, calf raises and thigh abductors.
- Sunday is a rest day for him.
Depending on the intensity, his workouts are adjusted as per requirements. If he is training for a movie, they are far more intense, as opposed to times when he simply has to maintain his physique.
Dwayne Johnson adjusts his diet plan according to his requirements, but usually, he eats the following meals every day.
- Meal 1
10 oz cod
2 whole eggs
2 cups oatmeal
- Meal 2
8 oz cod
12 oz sweet potato
1 cup veggies
- Meal 3
8 oz chicken
2 cups white rice
1 cup veggies
- Meal 4
8 oz cod
2 cups rice
1 cup veggies
1 tbsp fish oil
- Meal 5
8 oz steak
12 oz baked potato
- Meal 6
10 oz cod
2 cups rice
- Meal 7
30 grams casein protein
10 egg-white omelet
1 cup veggies (onions, peppers, mushrooms)
1 tbsp omega-3 fish oil
This amount of food works out to more than 5,000 calories per day, of which around 3,550 calories are burned on his workouts.
Maintaining his physique is a lot of work and sacrifice – he mentioned in an Instagram post that the last time he had any candy was in 1989.
His food is usually prepared by his chefs, who work with his coach and conditioner to make sure he is fed the right kind of food in the right quantity. When he needs to bulk up for a movie, his diet changes to include a lot more protein. Instead of cod, he starts eating steak. Brown rice, chicken, and halibut start figuring into his meal choices.
Dwayne Johnson’s physique is of comic-book proportions. There are superheroes who are not as muscular as he is. Due to his background as a wrestler and his genetics, he started out with a pretty impressive physique. But years of dedicated training every day have transformed him into the figure you see on your screens.
His physique is especially impressive considering he is 45 years old. At this point, plenty of people have been wondering if he uses steroids. He has made his stance on steroids pretty clear. He stated in an interview that he used them for a week or two when he was 18 or 19, but he hasn’t used them since then because they made him feel sick.
One major sign of steroid usage is overdevelopment in certain areas of the upper body. While Dwayne Johnson’s upper body is indeed quite developed, overall, his physique is proportionate. Steroid users tend to have massive upper bodies and tiny waists. With Dwayne Johnson, this is not the case. His muscles don’t appear juicy or overly full, they are within the achievable range.
Another point to note is vascularity. Even the lightest use of steroids makes veins bulge out. But on Dwayne Johnson’s body, no more veins are visible than there would be on any man of the same age. As people get older, their veins start to show more and more. His veins are perfectly within the normal range.
A large part of physique is down to diet. Due to his wealth, he can afford to eat over 5000 calories of high-quality food per day, along with whatever supplements he may choose. He also has access to the best coaches and chefs possible, so as to net him maximum gains.
As mentioned above, he trains six days a week, sometimes twice a day. With this level of hard work, it is impossible not to get results.
Besides that, he does not show any other signs of steroid use. He does not seem to suffer from a huge gut, he has no back acne that can be seen, his skin isn’t flushed or overly dark – none of the visual signs are there.
He just looks like the culmination of literal decades of outworking every single person in the gym.
So is Dwayne Johnson on steroids?
The truth is, whether Dwayne Johnson takes steroids or not doesn’t matter. His personal and professional achievements were never a result of steroids. He accomplished everything he did through a combination of hard work, planning, and near-endless willpower. He climbed to the heights of wrestling fame due to his charisma and style. He became a top-billed action star due to his willingness to learn and improve. None of this could have been improved by steroids in any way.
Obviously, his genes and background played a role. Being descended from wrestlers, having taken part in sports from a very young age, and having the resources to push himself to his limits have all helped turn him into the figure of heroic proportions that we see. Given all of these factors, it is perfectly likely that he has come by his physique naturally, via hard work and appropriate diet rather than by using steroids or hormones.
